Growing up in Mexico, designer Gustavo Nuñez was introduced to fashion at an early age, watching his mother create women's sportswear and learning the art of fabrics and garment construction firsthand. In 2017, he honoured her legacy by launching his eveningwear label, Verdin New York, named after Maria Verdin, before expanding into bridal four years later. We chat with Gustavo about his journey from childhood inspiration to designing modern bridalwear, and how his signature aesthetic has evolved along the way.
1/ Tell us about your background?
I’m originally from the vibrant city of Guadalajara, Mexico. I have a degree in fashion design from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) in Los Angeles, California.
Anastasia2/ Did you always want to be a designer?
My father was in the clothing business, and my mother was a self-made designer, so I grew up seeing her designing and she inspired me to follow her path.
Blossom3/ What experience did you have before launching your own collection?
I have been very lucky to have worked at some amazing brands with a legacy for design and creativity. My experiences at Marchesa and Reem Acra, among others, helped me learn the importance of couture details and the beauty of the creative side.
Briar4/ What made you decide to début a bridal collection?
Getting married to my partner, Juan Carlos Guzman, five years ago brought my mindset back to the beauty of weddings. I wanted to bring hope and romance back to the lives of brides. I have been working in the New York garment district, and I can proudly say my line is “Made in New York”.
Celeste5/ What does Verdin mean for the name of your brand?
Verdin is my mother’s maiden name, and she is the person who inspired me to become a designer. I wanted to keep it as a reminder not only of my Mexican roots but also of why I’m in the business.
Daphne6/ What does the new collection look like?
I wanted to incorporate the feeling of American sportswear into bridal by making beautifully constructed bustiers with timeless looks for a new generation of brides. I wanted to surprise them with some special, sexy details from my Mexican culture while keeping the collection sophisticated and wearable. Some of the looks can be worn as separates.
Eden7/ What is the “story” behind the collection for this bride to know?
It’s a personal story about my journey as an immigrant to America. I want to show that I still believe in the American dream and make my mark in bridal fashion in New York. Verdin Bridal Couture is all about elegance and high-end craftsmanship. With a focus on flawless tailoring and luxurious materials, this collection delivers stunning gowns that balance classic bridal beauty with modern sophistication.
Giselle8/ What are the price points and how many pieces?
The collection consists of 12 looks that will retail for $3,000–$6,000. In addition, it will include separate items that allow the bride to personalise each dress to her own taste and personality.
Jasmine9/ What do you think is your speciality with your designs?
I want to be known for my bustier, sharp silhouettes, fitted skirts and a feeling of modern romance and sexiness.
Mollie10/ Based on your past experiences in the industry working for top designer brands, what takeaway do you apply to your own business?
I have learned so much in my career about blending my passion and hard work with the bride's evolving tastes. I want a company built on creativity, but one that also reflects my life and fashion experience.
