The 5:2 diet also boasts promotes health benefits such as lower cholesterol and improvements to the insulin sensitivities and blood pressure.

So what’s it all about?

The 5:2 diet simply eating normally for five of the seven days in a week, paying little attention to calorie control. However, for the other two days of your choice, you must reduce your calorie intake to a quarter of what you need, which for women, is just 500 calories.

You can choose whichever days you want to fast, and they don’t have to be consecutive.

How you split your 500 calories on your fast day is up to you. Some studies recommend having your 500 calories in one meal, while others prefer to split it into several small meals throughout the day. Whichever method works best for you is the one you should go for.

Ideal foods for this diet are the usual suspects of high protein and fibre, while you should avoid refined carbs.

Once you reach your ideal goal, to keep the weight off it is recommended that you switch to a from the 5:2 diet plan to a 6:1 diet plan.
