Juice cleanse

So what’s it all about?

Juice cleanses vary depending on what you read, but to keep it safe and to avoid totally depriving your body, you should only do it for about three days before going back to solid foods.

It consists of three stages:

Pre-cleanse stage: Drink eight glasses of water a day for three days, while maintaining a light diet. Eat organic fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and eggs. Avoid alcohol, refined carbohydrates and processed foods.

Juice cleanse: Start your day with a glass of water with a slice of lemon. Then, drink six juices, throughout the day every two hours. So, you could have one at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and your last one at 7pm. There are plenty of juice cleanse companies that will send you the juices you should be drinking. Alternatively, you can make your own, but it can’t be just any juice you feel like. There’s a system to follow, starting with a green juice, with a ‘spicy’ lemonade in the middle of the day and ending with a banana-cashew ‘dessert’ smoothie.

Post-cleanse stage: This is when you start introducing food back into your body. On day one after the cleanse, add in organic whole fruits and vegetables and eight glasses of water. On day two, add in nuts, brown rice, eggs and yoghurt. Then over the next two days work organic meat, chicken and fish as well as whole grains back into your diet. From there you can build a healthier diet.

Important:

- Consult your doctor before going on a juice cleanse.

- Keep the juice cleanse stage to three days. If you need to eat during this time, stick to organic fruit and vegetables.

- You can exercise during the diet, but stick to very light exercise like stretching and yoga. Do not over exert yourself.
